In today’s gospel, three people volunteer to become disciples. Jesus points out to them that emphasis on the care of self, care for the dead, or care of one's family will not guarantee them discipleship with him.
Jesus seems harsh in his answer to them, but he is only asking of his disciples what he asks of himself. An unconditional commitment to God's work and not hindrances from family and even self. He knows this, but the disciples do not fully grasp it. He does not want anyone to rush into discipleship, because the demands of discipleship require everyone considering it and going beyond the self the dead and family without looking back.
May we give ourselves completely to the work of God and discipleship.
